What WHOIS is
WHOIS is the public directory of domain registrations. By default it can show the registrant's name, postal address, phone number, and email for anyone who queries it. For an individual, that means personal details are on public display.
What the privacy service does
When WHOIS privacy is enabled on your domain, One World Domains replaces your personal contact details in the public record with our privacy proxy. The public WHOIS then shows:
- the domain name, status, and important dates;
- the delegated nameservers;
- a privacy-service contact address instead of your own.
Your real details remain on file with us so we can reach you; they are simply not published. Availability depends on the TLD, since a few registries do not permit privacy or publish their own thin WHOIS.
What it does not do
Privacy is not anonymity. We still hold your true registrant information, and we will disclose it where we are legally required to, or in response to a valid abuse or law-enforcement request as described in our abuse policy and law-enforcement policy. Messages sent to the privacy address are forwarded to you.
Turning it on or off
Ask for it when you register, or enable it later at any time; there is no charge. To change the setting, email privacy@oneworlddomains.com from the registrant address on file.
